A small study has found that men who used erectile dysfunction medication over the past year have a higher risk of heart disease.
A study found that those who used erectile dysfunction medication was associated with a 69 percent higher risk of cardiovascular disease, the smallest risk in a study of more than 1 million men.
The findings, published in theJournal of the American College of Cardiology, were published in theBritish Medical Journalin November 2012.
Heart disease is the most common cause of death in men over the age of 50, and about half of all deaths in men aged 50 and older are from heart disease.
The study, from theAmerican Heart Association, found that the number of people who used erectile dysfunction medication in the previous year was a whopping 69 percent higher than the number of men who took other medications.
In the study, the researchers found that the odds of cardiovascular disease in men who used erectile dysfunction medication were higher in men who had a history of heart disease.
The researchers also found that the study's authors were cautious about the association between erectile dysfunction medication and coronary heart disease, and there was some concern that the study could have bias.
However, the researchers concluded that the findings are "worth taking note of and of course, that it was not statistically significant for".
The study was published in the
Dr John Gormley, an epidemiologist at the University of Manchester, said: "I am delighted with the results of this study. It suggests that the association between erectile dysfunction and cardiovascular disease is real.
"This study shows that even though we did not find an association, this finding suggests that erectile dysfunction medication has the potential to cause more harm than the disease itself."
He added: "Our findings suggest that erectile dysfunction medication could be very harmful to a man's heart, and may have implications for people who are at increased risk of heart disease."
The research was funded by Pfizer Inc, which manufactures Viagra.

Pfizer Inc had no immediate comment on the research but said in a statement: "The study does not directly examine the association between erectile dysfunction medication and cardiovascular disease".
However, Dr Ian Read, a professor of medicine at the University of London, added: "The findings of this study demonstrate that erectile dysfunction medication has the potential to cause more harm than the disease itself."
Read, who is also the head of the clinical pharmacist at Pfizer, added: "The study does not directly examine the association between erectile dysfunction medication and cardiovascular disease, but it is a matter of debate whether this is an appropriate treatment for men with cardiovascular disease."
